Our take on menopause and exercise

You may have never thought that exercise could have no effect on how women experience menopause. In fact, this couldn’t be further from the truth! In this blog post, we delve a little into menopause and the benefits of exercise in alleviating symptoms of menopause.

So, what is menopause?

  • Menopause is the period in a female’s life when they stop menstruating. Usually, this is 12 months after a woman’s last period. Women can experience changes to their monthly cycles leading up to this transitional point and other symptoms.

  • The average age of it occurring is around 45-55.

  • Within the process, the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone fluctuate, which presents itself in many different symptoms.

What symptoms should I expect when I am going through menopause?

Because menopause is such a big transition on the female body, unfortunately many women experience unpleasant symptoms that can last for quite a long time. As every body is different, some may experience more symptoms for a longer period of time, or maybe they will be short-lived.

Here are some of the common symptoms:

  • Hot flushes

  • Headaches

  • Weight gain

  • Mood swings

  • Lack of sex drive

  • Fatigue

  • Achey joints

  • Difficulty sleeping

Exercise is beneficial to everyone’s general health, but I bet you didn’t know that exercise can actually benefit nearly all symptoms of menopause!
