The importance of N.E.A.T.
Let’s talk about N.E.A.T.
Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (N.E.A.T) essentially is all your activity outside of the gym.
Let's say you spend 2-5 hours in the gym a week. That's great, but what you do outside of that has a big impact on your results.
How can I boost your cardiovascular health, and bump up my daily calorie expenditure?
Simply moving more and sitting less will give you a huge boost, not just for the calorie-burning effect, but for your cardiovascular health as well.
Day-to-day steps are the easiest way to not only improve your low-end aerobic base but also to increase your daily calorie expenditure.
For getting fitter, maintaining your fitness, or for anyone who has fat-loss goals, it should be NON-NEGOTIABLE to your day.
It's called N.E.A.T. (non-exercise activity thermogenesis), and is basically all the calories you burn OUTSIDE of exercise.
How can I increase my N.E.A.T.?
Schedule a 30-40 min walk in your lunch break
Take the stairs at EVERY opportunity (even in London - please don't be one of those guys who just stand still on the escalators!)
Walk into town to pick up your lunch
Walk to the gym! (So many of you live within 1 mile of the gym )
Park in the car parking space furthest away from the shop
Get off your bus/tube a stop early
Take your phone calls standing up where possible
As with all these things, there should be NO drastic changes to your day-to-day lifestyle, otherwise, you'll never maintain the routine!
But if you just implement 2-3 of the above options into your day, it will have a positive effect.
Now you know what N.E.A.T. is and how important it is for your health & fitness, try and think of other things that you can do that suit your daily routine to increase your N.E.A.T.
Keep moving, you’re doing great!
