Are you consuming enough protein?

First and foremost, what even is protein?

    • Protein is found in muscle, bone, skin, hair, and all across your body parts and tissues.

    • It forms the enzymes that power chemical reactions and also haemoglobin, which carries oxygen in your blood.

    • At minimum, there are 10,000 different proteins which form what you are.

    • Protein is made from twenty-plus basic building blocks called amino acids. Because we don’t store amino acids, our bodies make them in two different ways: either from scratch, or by modifying others. The most essential amino acids come from food.

Why do I need to consume protein?

    • Eating protein helps to prevent muscle breakdown, alongside helping to build muscle. Combining regular activity and exercise with protein intake promotes muscle growth. High-quality proteins contain all of the essential amino acids and are rich in branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs).

    • So, protein forms the building blocks which help your muscles grow, recover and gain or maintain strength.

    • If you are doing your strength training with us at Patch, you will start noticing a difference to your results when you are eating enough of the right sorts of protein!

    • It’s not to say that you won’t be able to grow muscle without a high protein diet… But you will make your life a whole lot easier if you do!

How much protein do I need to consume to help with my muscle growth and recovery?

    • A typical guideline would be 1.4g-2g of protein / KG of your body weight each day.

What kinds of food are high in protein and I should look to include in my diet?

    • Meat: Chicken breast, Beef, Pork Loin.

    • Dairy: Greek Yoghurt, Whey Protein, Cottage Cheese.

    • Fish: Salmon, Tinned Tuna, Prawns.

    • Legumes: Lentils, Chickpeas, Beans, Peanuts.

    • Other: Protein Bars, Eggs.
